Robusta coffee is not the climate backup the industry hoped for

A new review argues that robusta's reputation as the climate proof coffee was never tested on farms, and the field data points the other way.
Robusta coffee has spent a decade carrying a reputation it never earned in the field. A review published on 27 August 2026 in the journal Sustainable Development works back through the evidence behind that reputation and concludes that the climate resilience claims made for farmed robusta are misguided. The authors are not saying the species is fragile. They are saying nobody checked it properly.
What the review says about robusta coffee
Aaron P. Davis and Justin Moat of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, with Akshay Dashrath of SICC Labs in Karnataka, went through the climate change analyses used to project robusta's future, the climate parameters those analyses rest on, soil water, and the inputs coffee farming leans on. The verdict is blunt. Those analyses are likely to be misleading, through methodological oversights and by missing how much irrigation already holds the crop up. The review is open access and tabulates climate parameters for wild and cultivated robusta alongside four other coffee species.
The temperature number behind the doubt
The hard numbers come from an older study, not from this review. In 2020, work published in Global Change Biology used 10 years of yield records from 798 farms across South East Asia and put robusta's optimal mean annual temperature below 20.5 °C. The range the trade worked from was 22 °C to 30 °C, taken from the plant's native Congo basin rather than from farms.
Past that optimum the fall is steep. Every 1 °C above the optimal band corresponded to a yield decline of roughly 14%. At mean annual temperatures over 25.1 °C, mid-way into the old assumed range, coffee yields ran 50% below the optimum.

Irrigation is doing more of the work than the plant
The sharpest part of the review is about water. Robusta handles heat better than arabica coffee does, but it does not handle drought, and the countries growing most of it are not, on the paper's reading, climatically suited to it. Brazil, India and Vietnam all sit on that list, and all three lean on substantial irrigation to make the crop work at all.
That carries a cost the resilience story never counted. Heavy irrigation, thin tree shade and high synthetic fertilizer use pull against biodiversity stewardship and against a low carbon economy, which is the same tension running under the industry's regenerative farming targets.
Why coffee yields matter beyond one species
Robusta supplies 40% of world coffee production, which makes this more than a botanical argument. Roasters and blenders have treated a shift from arabica to robusta as the cheap adaptation waiting in reserve if coffee growing regions keep warming. If robusta's own window is narrower than assumed, that reserve shrinks, and the coffee yields meant to absorb the shock are the ones under pressure.
The price side of the same shift showed up years ago, when robusta stopped being the cheap bean. The agronomy is only catching up with it now.

What a coffee drinker can actually check
None of this makes robusta a bad bean, and the review does not say so. It says the climate resilience shortcut was never tested properly, and that the fix runs through where the crop is planted, how it is grown and what breeders work on, not the species name alone.
Species and origin are printed on most bags, and altitude sometimes is. That is thin, but it is more than the coffee market offered a reader ten years ago. Read it first, then read the next claim about a climate proof crop a little more slowly.
